Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease Treatments

It is a great discomfort for the patients and a person feels really ill and cannot carry on his daily life activities.

Here we are talking about the Gastroesophageal reflux disease, its diagnosis and erosive esophagitis, which is a disease resulted from GERD.

GERD and its Symptoms

This is a stomach disorder when acids of the stomach flows back into the esophagus, due to the malfunctioning of esophagus muscles. Heartburn, chest pain, cough, sore throat and nausea are some common symptoms of this problem. In the beginning, heartburn is occasional but if left untreated it can become more frequent. When an individual experience heartburn twice a week, this is the clearest indication of Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease. However, we cannot use these symptoms as a diagnosis of this problem.

Erosive Esophagitis Explained

Esophagitis is the term used to describe inflammation, swelling, or irritation of the esophagus. GERD is caused when stomach acids flow back into the esophagus causing esophagitis. This situation is quite critical and lead to many serious problems like erosive esophagitis.

This is the severe condition, when the lining of esophagus gets damaged by consistent and long lasting acid reflux. When acid reflux is left untreated for long, erosive esophagitis is the result. This is a common problem all over the world. In developed countries, nearly 40% people are patients of heartburn, which is a primary symptom of GERD. In sever condition, people need to get hospitalized. According to an estimate, nearly half of the patients of GERD also suffer from Erosive esophagitis.

When an individual feels heartburn twice a week, it is suspected that he might be suffering from Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease. When you will consult your doctor, he will take the complete history and will review the symptom. Endoscopy can be used to confirm the problem, however, in some patients endoscopic results are not reliable.

Treatment of gastroesophagul reflux disease starts with the reduction of gastric activity which can be done with a product like Acid Control by Digestive Science. The pH of the stomach should be above than 4, it will reduce the damage caused by reflux acids. PPI or Proton pump inhibitor therapy is used to maintain this pH. It also suppresses the release of stomach acids, so use of PPI is the first treatment which should be applied to the patients of GERD. Getting treatment at initial stage, can reduce the cost of medication remarkably and symptoms can be gone earlier.

GERD classification

According to Los Angeles classification of disease severity, we can classify Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease. Grade A, B, C and D are given to these. A is the less severe infection while D is the the case when at least 75% of the esophagus is affected. This is the basic information about Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease. Reflux symptoms can vary in different persons, as some symptoms are common with other diseases.

Causes of GERD are also different but some common ones are bad eating habits and no physical activity. Treatment should be started in time, to avoid sever conditions like erosive esophagitis. You can not grade the severity of the disease, a consultation with the doctor is necessary for diagnosis.
